Transcript – Why SEO is a Team Sport
SEO. What does it even mean? Now, obviously, I know it stands for search engine optimization but what does it actually mean in terms of the implementation of doing SEO? Well, in this video I’m going to break down why SEO is a team effort, and if you go out there alone and think you can do SEO as a one-man band, you may struggle. Coming up, right now. Hey there, guys. Darren Taylor of thebigmarketer.co.uk here, and my job is to teach you all about search engine marketing.
If that’s up the street, you should consider subscribing to my channel. Today, I’m looking at why SEO is not a job for a one-man band, why no one person can do all of SEO. In my honest opinion, it’s something that has to be a team effort and here is why. At the beginning of this video, I asked the question, “What is SEO?” Now, in my opinion, SEO is a blend of multiple disciplines and digital marketing. You’re not going to be 10 out of 10 of all the areas of SEO. Let’s break that down a little bit. First of all, you need links.
Everyone knows for SEO success, you need to build backlinks to your website. How do you do it? Well, there are a couple of ways to do that. One of them is to write really amazing content, create amazing content, and hopefully, people will pick that content up and link back to your website. So, can you even write? Can you write good content? Are you a good writer? Would you class yourself as a good writer? Now, chances are you might be a good writer, you might be an okay writer but if you’re like me, the reason I’m on camera is because I’m not the best writer. I know that.
When it comes to SEO, for me, I need help writing content because I’m not an amazing writer. I like being in front of the camera. Just an FYI, content writing is so undervalued right now, there are a lot of people out there who think they can write content, and I’ve seen a lot of content out there. It’s very, very hard to find someone who’s genuinely good at writing content. So if you’re in that bracket, fantastic. If you’re average at writing content, then are you really giving yourself the best chance, SEO-wise?
Let’s look at the next thing. You’ve written the content, you’ve got great content, and you want to generate links, and you might have people linking to your content. Well, from there, what’s next? You want people to link to you as well from other sources. How do you do that? You have to have conversations with them. You have to promote your business. You have to promote your content and you have to do outreach. Now, it’s very easy to say, “I can be an SEO and I can optimize things on page,” but can you actually pick the phone up?
Can you actually write compelling cold emails to other bloggers, to other website editors to generate links for your business? Can you create compelling PR stories for your business that people would want to link to or write about? Well, again that’s another very niche skill that not everybody has. Not everybody can be a PR. Not everybody has the confidence to pick the phone up and generate links that way and reach out to people with cold emails.
Again, this is another skill that’s very niche, very sought-after, and not everybody can do. The two things I’ve mentioned just now are very, let’s say, right-brained activities. Of course, what I mean by a SEO being a multi-discipline side of marketing is that it’s not just right brain, it’s also left brain. So let’s get down to the technical nitty-gritty of SEO. We obviously know that you can write content and you can promote that content, and you can have the conversations with people but what about your actual website itself? The infrastructure, the hierarchy, the technical aspects, the speed and optimization of your website from a technical point of view?
These things, you need to be or have some knowledge of web development to do. If you’re not a web developer and you don’t understand how to build websites, you don’t understand how to make a website go faster, and I mean going beyond just downloading a couple of WordPress plug-ins, I mean really, really understanding content delivery across the internet, then there’s going to be a problem. You’re not going to get the best results from a technical point of view, do you know the hierarchy of your website? Can you spot errors and issues across your site in terms of linking, broken links, orphaned pages, using the tools out there that are available to you to spot these differences?
Yes, you might be able to do that but I guarantee you, if you can do that to a very high degree, you’re probably not the best content writer because it’s a left and right brain battle again, SEO-wise. It’s really important to make sure you have all the bases covered and speak to the right people when it comes to SEO and do it as a team effort. Then finally, you’ve got the obvious marketing side of SEO. Spotting opportunities, keyword research, optimization on-page, all the kind of things that most people think is the primary part of SEO, is the kind of marketing side of SEO, the digital marketing side that a lot of people know how to do.
Now, I’ve explained to you all the different sectors of SEO and why they’re so different, and it takes different personalities. That’s why it’s so important to make sure you have the right contacts in SEO, to speak to the right people, build the right relationships in order to deliver the best results for yourself. If you’re an agency for your clients as well, and you hire the right people to do that, and have the right people in house to do that.
Guys, if you spot an SEO consultant that says they can do the technical side of SEO 10 out of 10, the digital marketing, keyword research side, and on-page optimization side 10 out of 10, the PR and outreach side 10 out of 10, the content creating, and writing side 10 out of 10, run for the hills because it’s a lie. Nobody can do all those elements to the highest level. That is why SEO is a team effort. Thank you guys so much for watching this video. If you liked it, please leave me a like below.
